Crane Cricket Club Crane v Wessex Exiles on Sun 29 Aug 2004 at 1pm
Crane Cricket Club Lost Loss by10 runs

Match report A wet, cold & windy day met the teams of Crane and Wessex Exiles. Having won the toss, the opposition captain elected to bat first on what was a green middle that looked to be slow.

Sunny and Jason opened the attack for Crane and soon everyone quickly realised that there was no pace in the pitch and hard graft was needed in both the disciplines of batting and fielding. Sunny and Jason bowled well with as much pace as they could muster and lots of movement. Unluckily the good balls were beating both the edge and wickets but the bad balls were being put away gracefully by the Wessex openers with ease. A few chances were given but Crane didn’t seize on their opportunities. Wessex had got off to a good start and at one stage had reach 63 for no loss in the 15th over, with M Dixon making a splendid fifty. His innings was a delight to watch with him punishing the bad balls, defending with a straight bat and quick running between wickets.

The breakthrough came by Crane's own lion Nick. With Sanj bowling beautifully at one end with superb line & length and preventing the batsmen scoring at ease, Simba soon started to tear into the opposition batting with some ferocious fast bowling. Between them they bowled 14 overs, conceding only 39 runs and taking 5 wickets. Nick ended up with 4 wickets and Sanj reached a Milestone of 30 wickets for the season.

As the pressure grew Romy took another wicket and Crane inflicted 2 run outs. Wessex Exiles eventually were out for 129 of their allotted 35 overs. Crane's fielding through out Wessex's innings was half hearted and had lost its usual bite and thus had allowed Wessex a few too many runs on what was a very slow pitch. A lapse which they would later regret.

The target was gettable but the task made onerous due to the conditions. Most of Crane's batsman didn’t adapt to the slowness of the middle and were eventually out due to either mis reading what the ball was doing and/or bad shot selection. Crane at one stage had reached 67 for 6 of 22 overs with Walters only conceding 11 runs of his 7 overs. Amo and Jason both played maturely for an excellent 40 & 27 respectively, with shots of pure power and timing. Crane's chase had two defining points - one losing Amo when the score was 66 thus losing our momentum and then crucially losing Jason when the score was at 108 thus losing direction as we looked to heading home. Our final score was 119 and were 11 short of the winning post.

The game was played with friendly banter and above all in the correct spirit, emphasised by Wessex Exiles requesting that this game be a regular fixture on both out calendars for next season.

Well Done Wessex Exiles and look out for us next year for we will be coming at you guys with all guns blazing.
