Match report
Borg - Origin: Delta Quadrant. A cybernetic life-form thousands of years old which is part organic, part artificial life. They have a singular goal, namely the consumption of technology, rather than wealth or political expansion as most species seek. The Borg only want to "raise the quality of life" of the species they "assimilate." The collective consciousness is experienced by the Borg as "thousands" of voices - they are collectively aware, but not aware of themselves as separate individuals. Consequently, they never speak in singular pronouns, referring to themselves when required as merely "Third of Five," for instance.
Sobek was an ancient Egyptian god of crocodiles, the people of Egypt worshiping him to gain his protection and strength, or reviling him and killing the crocodiles of the area because of the evil that they could do.
This was the first game for Crane after their now infamous tour of Brighton. With the players returning with wounds, hangovers and joyous memories, the question was were they ready for their next encounter with Ealing Park. A cold and windy day welcomed both teams and after winning the toss, the opposition captain elected to bat.
The opening batsman for Ealing Park came out in a confident and aggressive manner with all guns blazing, wielding their bats and smashing the bad balls to all parts of the grounds. Fours were being scored at will and the run rate climbed as the batsman took control. Crane bowling was not bad but more inconsistent, along with some great deliveries the odd long-hop was bowled, and the opposition batsman took advantage of those and pierced the boundaries each and every time. After 20 overs Ealing Park were on 120 runs and Crane were facing a huge total to chase.
But like crocodiles Crane's fielders waited patiently for their chance and as soon as a opportunity for a wicket rose, the Crane fielders pounced on the chance and snared their prey. With a quick mind and an accurate throw to the keeper, Romy ran out the opening batsman. Then Anoop took two fantastic catches off Romy's & Mittal's bowling to remove the number three and two batsmen. Each time the balls were skied up and travelling at a good rate with Anoop running quickly back, got his head in line with the ball and with steely nerve calmly took the catches over his shoulder. This was the fire that was needed to ignite Crane's somewhat diminished passion. Crane never allowed the Ealing Batsman to make too many huge partnership and due to some fine bowling (with Sanj taking 3 wickets) conceded only 70 runs in the final 20 overs. Of these 70 runs, Jonathan made 50 playing superbly showing his class and power with some lovely stroke play.
The crocodile's power to snatch and destroy it's prey was thought to be symbolic of the might of the pharaoh - the strength and energy of the reptile was a manifestation of the pharaoh's own power. In terms of Crane, the pharaoh being the Crane Skipper himself and the crocodiles the collective known as the Crane players. Sobek would have been proud of this rejuvenation.
Crane came out to bat needing 191 for victory. Like the Borg, when Crane players are assimilated into their batting positions they also have a collective consciousness which enables them to raise the quality of their batting'. Among the many advantages their collective consciousness affords them, the Crane hive-mind allows for instantaneous adaptations to conditions being faced; they are also able to regenerate and repair their techniques with the power of their collective thoughts alone.
1 of 11 Amo and 2 of 11 Romy opened the innings. 2 of 11 was out early and 3 of 11 Hardeep came into bat. 3 of 11 batted well & quickly upped the tempo with a flourish of fours and began showing glimpse of his form but was eventually out with a very good catch taken at point. At his dismissal, Crane were 35 for 2. In came 4 of 11 Mittal. 1 of 11 after seeing of the very good bowling of the Ealing Park openers began to set his stall but a lack of concentration was enough for him to get out and soon after 5 of 11 Jim was following him back to the dressing room. At this stage Crane were 74 for 4. Overs were never the consideration in this run chase since it was a gettable target, what was a matter of concern was Crane's ability to bat through with losing only a minimum of wickets.
Joining 4 of 11 was 6 of 11 Jason. 4 of 11 not used to not hitting boundaries, corrected his game and was running three's and two's instead. 6 of 11 once again with his special shoes bounced and ran his heart out with 4 of 11. 4 of 11 made a splendid 34 before being out and set the foundation for a Crane victory. At 110 for 5, 7 of 11 Varun came in.
Looking nervous he soon settled in and too made an impact. He held one side up as 6 of 11 started to open up at the other. An excellent 45 run partnership was made in a tense atmosphere as well as bad light coming into play. 7 of 11 was dismissed as Crane reached 155 but the tension was paramount as the winning line was within reach. In came 8 of 11 Vinod. Scoring boundaries seemed hard to many players due to the lush outfield but 8 of 11 didn't care for statistics and crashed two lovely fours before getting out with the score at 173. In came 9 of 11 Rishi who looked instantly at ease in the situation and with 6 of 11, guided the team to victory.
6 of 11 'Jason' played brilliantly and made an intelligent 43 which helped sway the game into Crane's favour. He counted each ball, the overs each bowlers had left and directed the other players around him as he scored his runs. A captains knock on what was a good day for the skipper who bowled, fielded, batted and above all commanded his troops well.
Crane's top score was 44 which were Extras and thus the difference between winning & losing was in the bowling and fielding.
Once again a special mention to Ealing Park for making this game a fun filled event and being great guests.
Well Done Crane.
