Celtic God of Youth - Maponos alias Mabon

A cloudy afternoon welcomed Crane at the home of their formidable opponents Godalming. They are one of the toughest teams we face and a fixture all of Crane's members look forward in playing for both the cricketing standard and social interaction. On winning the toss, Crane elected to bat.

Godalming bowlers soon found their rhythm, adapted to the conditions and quickly found their line, length and movement. Jason's, Romy's and Hardeep's first scoring shot was a boundary but with some fine bowling fell early with Hardeep getting a beauty of a delivery. Crane's batsman never got going and after 24 overs were 67 for 7. Tushar played with lots of concentration and determination in a high pressured situation and made a commendable 18.

At this stage, Crane didn't want to embarrass themselves. Then up stepped Rahul Ghai - Va Va Jnr - the third in the trilogy of the Ghai's with him being the good, Varun the bad and Vinod the ugly. With fearless youth, tenacious talent and courageous will blasted Crane out of the dire they were in with some superb stroke play and maturity. He made a swashbuckling 32 and with the Word-up performances of Vinod & Sanj took Crane to a final score of 119.

Crane came out to bowl with a purpose. It seemed that the power of Mabon (Mabon's light is drawn into the Earth, gathering strength and wisdom) spread through all of Crane and Godalming were losing wickets at an alarming rate and were soon struggling at 108 for 9.

Jason bowled magnificently with pace, movement and intelligence. The first four wickets fell to the skipper with Jim and the new boy Va Va Jnr taking two splendid catches. The skipper's spell was pure class and finished with 7-1-15-4. Va Va jnr's day was not over yet, after some brilliant batting and fielding, he bowled just as well. His legspin had aggression, turn and bounce and had the batsman in trouble. He bowled with a maturity beyond his young age and took 3 superb wickets.

But Dewey held his nerve and after a good shout for an LBW guided Godalming home, with a match wining 31, for a one wicket victory.

Crane started the day nearly embarrassing themselves but recovered and after a remarkable fight back did themselves proud even though they didn't win. Once again a special thanks to our own loyal supporters Shobha, Jas and Dilba who have through out the season cheered us on home & away and have given us that extra lift in times of trouble. A warm & friendly smile and applause by them when one is walking back when out is more than welcomed and very much appreciated. A request to the Executive Committee of Crane to provide them with pompoms and whistles thus we can have our very own Crane's Supporters Club.

Also a special mention to Nick Horne who again was a great host and enlightened us with his cricketing knowledge. Well Done Godalming and see you next year.

Well Done Crane.
