Match report Genealogy - of the Descendants of Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick of Salem, Mass., the Original Emigrants, and the Ancestors of the Families Who Have Since Borne His Name, by James M. Caller and Mrs. M. A. Ober (Salem, MA, 1881). The Quaker Martyrs, Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick, settled in Salem, Massachusetts, in or before 1639. There they fell victim eventually to the Puritans, who jailed them, whipped them, and ultimately banished them. They died on Shelter Island in 1660 of “privation and exposure,” while Endicott, the governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, tried to sell their children into slavery.

A very hot day welcomed Crane to its second and ritual like away game in Southwick and has tradition has it, the opposition captain put Crane into bat. This is an all day game with a morning start with breaks for Lunch and Tea and then 20 overs at 6.30pm. A lovely small ground surround by houses where a terrific atmosphere develops late in the afternoon as the locals come to watch the play.

Southwick opening attack bowled well with pace and enthusiasm and soon after Crane were on their back foot at 37 for 2 after 9 overs with both Romy and Hardeep back in the pavilion. At the crease were Ozzie and Zubin who had to steady the ship but at the same time put runs on the board. The bowling was hostile and tight and the pressure was on. Ozzie continuing his magnificent form went on to make 69 (12 fours) and contributed to a 126 run partnership. Zubin showed his class and with the Puritans of Cricket watching on with awe could not fault the way he effortlessly punished the ball to the boundaries making a brilliant 96 (15 fours & 2 sixes). Jim and Nick upped the tempo by blasting 66 in 8 overs and establishing Crane's final score of 269.

With a huge score on the board, Crane's Cavalry came out gun hoe. Nick bowled with hunger and pace whilst Jason with guile and passion. Nick roared like the Lion he is at one end but was evenly match by the screams of a tiger the other. Southwick were soon in deep trouble at 125 for 7 with wickets going to Nick (3), Jason (2) and Vinod (2).

Crane's skipper decided to make a game of it (since we were on tour and Southwick had done so in a similar position a year ago) and rested the cavalry.

An unbeatable 145 run partnership in 26 overs between Father and Son allowed Southwick to cruise home to a 3 wicket victory. Martin Snr made a excellent 106 not out and Martin Jnr made a tremendous 54 not out. They played superbly for their runs, withstanding the pressure of the huge chase and not giving any chances away.

The Opposition Man of the Match was Martin Snr for his glorious knock.

Thank you to Southwick for their splendid hospitality and once again an exciting & fun filled game.

Well done Crane!
