Match report
Tales of Old Lewes - A tradition of long descent has it that Harold of England, defeated at the Battle of Hastings, and sorely wounded by William the Conqueror's troops, was rescued from among the heaps of wounded and dead left on the field by his wife, " Editha of the Swan-neck," and subsequently, after many wanderings, became an anchorite, and ended his days as a holy anchorite in the church of St John-sub-Castro, Lewes. An anchorite's cell in the outer wall of the church was in good order up to the time of the rebuilding of the church in its present form. The inscription above the anchorite's cell was preserved, and was rebuilt into the new wall of the church - where the lettering can be seen today; but whether it is on the actual spot of the cell it is hard to ascertain.
Another hot & humid day welcomed Crane to its last game on tour against Lewes St Michaels and has tradition has it, the opposition captain put Crane into bat. This is one of the best cricketing grounds we have played on with a beautiful table, a perfectly cut square and an carpet smooth outfield. Looking at the ground we knew we were up against a team who took their cricket seriously.
Lewes opening four bowlers found their grove early on and were swinging the ball into and away from the Crane batsman. They made an early breakthrough with Romy departing to the pavilion as early as the second over. Ozzie and Hardeep stuck to the disciplines of batting and played through a sticky patch. Ozzie made a patient 23 before being bowled and Amo went soon after for 13. Crane were 86 for 3 after 20 overs. Hardeep started to play some awesome shots and soon found his touch and form and with the help of Rishi, they made 61 runs in the next 10 overs. Hardeep with his trademark drives through the cover and extra cover areas quickly amassed a splendid 81 (13 fours) before losing his wicket to an leading edge. Crane 4 wickets in the space of 3 overs for 19 runs. Vinod and Sanj were at the crease in the 36th over with the score on 175. They scored 38 in the next 4 overs with balls rocketing to the boundary and with the help of Jason, who made Sanj run all four on the last ball of the over. Crane's final score was a very commendable 213.
Being a fast bowlers track, Nick 'Simba' Patel and our own WMD Ozzy were ready and geared up. Nick tore at the batsman with a fury never seen before and with Ozzy swinging the ball from the other end, Lewes game was up as early as the 6th over. Nick bowled a majestic and hostile spell of fast bowling with figures of 3-2-4-3. Three great catches by Ozzy in the gully, Jason and Amo in the slips off Nicks bowling had Lewes 8 for 3 off 5 overs. Soon after a terrible mix up by the batsman gifted Ozzy with a run out had Lewes 8 for 4 off 6 overs. The game was more and less ended when Ozzy in the 8th over took two more wickets and Lewes were reeling at 30 for 6.
Everyone got a chance to bowl and in the 22nd over Lewes were bowled out for 126. This was a strong batting team put out by Lewes but Nick fierce some fire power was the key difference. It was like he was the Norman conquest that enveloped Harold's army and he was the one that fired the fatal arrow that pierced Harold's heart and thus the heart of Lewes batting.
The Opposition Man of the Match was Hare for his all round contribution to the game in preparing the wicket, his bowling and his batting.
Thank you to Lewes St Michaels for their splendid hospitality and for a battle of a game.
Well done Crane!
