Steyning Rebels CC v Crane Cricket Club Crane on Sat 07 Aug 2004 at
Crane Cricket Club Lost Loss by 3 wickets
Match report
Infamous - The Saxons were here and the Romans had temples close by - but it was the Normans and their successors who established the town as we know it today. Shakespeare was still alive when Steyning's Grammar School was founded.
Another scorcher of a day welcomed Crane to its third game against Steyning Rebels and has tradition has it, the opposition captain put Crane into bat. This is an all day game with a morning start with breaks for Lunch and Tea and then 20 overs at 6.30pm. A beautiful small ground surround by trees & bushes making it very picturesque indeed
An indifferent start was made to some indifferent bowling. After 9 overs, Crane were 19 with the loss of Tushar and Rishi. Crane slowly but steadily built a score. 68 runs were scored in the next 10 overs with the loss of the swashbuckling duo of Amo and Sunny. Jim got a start but to got out when looking steady. Mittal upped the tempo with a display of power hitting and went on to make a super 56 (8 fours & 2 sixes) and with the support of Sanj and Hardeep, helped Crane to a modest 199 off their allotted 40 overs.
Sanj opened the bowling for Crane and true to form, with the help of Amo, had Steyning Rebels in trouble who were 51 for 4 after 15 overs. At one stage their figures were 6-3-10-3 and 4-1-8-1 respectively. They couldn’t have written the script any more poetically if they had to ink it in with a feather pen themselves. Crane's skipper decided to make a game of it and rested the dynamic duo.
A gigantic task was asked of Hammond and Dexter who need 149 off 35 overs to gain victory. Once again a 123 run partnership of 20 overs helped them with their task. Hammond getting out for a splendid 77 with strokes worthy of praise. But the turning point of the match was Dexter who blasted a quick fire 57 (48 runs came in boundaries and 22 of those of Sanj's last over) and then being dropped late in the day.
Late in the day wickets tumbled as Sunny heated up the attack and the pressure was on both the bowling team to get wickets & contain the runs and the batsman on not getting out & making the runs. Steyning Rebels and especially Dexter Junior held their nerves and went on to win with an over to spare.
The Opposition Man of the Match was Hammond who made a match winning 77.
Thank you to Steyning Rebels for their splendid hospitality and to a 'ball by ball exciting to the end' game.
Well done Crane!
