Match report
Juggernaut - An overwhelming, advancing force that crushes or seems to crush everything in its path.
Mihos - In Egyptology was the lion god and son of Bastet (Cat Goddess), the guardian of sacred places and an aggressor who attacks and mauls a captive enemy.
After a month long voyage of travelling far & wide across this great landscape of ours in quest of victories, Crane's formidable army at last came home to rest. Due to last weeks performance the Crane cricketers were looking forward to an outing on home soil, to display their talents in the fine art of blade wielding & leather jettisoning, otherwise known as cricket. Rewards of wine & good cheer were awaiting a triumphant result but as always the lions were hungry in raucous anticipation of a defeated team.
Today was a historic day for Crane with three all time best performances being achieved :- highest individual score (Nick's 145), highest team score (296) and best catch (Ozzie's one-hand magic show).
A warm and windy day greeted the teams of Crane and their opposition Egham Roses. Surprisingly again Egham Roses won the toss and gave Crane the opportunity to set down a score.
After an opening scare with Romy being run out, Crane never looked back. Nick complied his mammoth score with contributions & support from Ozzie who continued his splendid form with a superbly played 56, from Jason with a quick fire 17, from Jim with a swashbuckling 30 and from Daljit who even though made 9 was part of a 30 run partnership with Jim of 3 overs.
One special mention to Varun who was Crane's first 'Juggernaut'. From buying a jug for his fifty last week to being bowled for zero this week - hence Jug-n-Naught.
As for Nick, a man who has the balance, poise & agility like a feline and using many of his nine lives played exquisitely for his 145 with strokes of raw power, impeccable timing and delightful precision. His runs came at a quick rate producing a vast array of shots with the ball racing to the boundary on all parts of the ground. A majestic & masterful display - incredibly this was Nick's first bat of the season.
One can not say this was a pussycat performance but can compare it to that of a lion. The Pharaohs may have had Mihos but Crane has it own Lion King - Nick 'Simba' Patel.
At the end of Crane's innings we reached an all time highest score of 296. Egham Roses faced an uphill struggle.
Crane with tight bowling made the early breakthrough and Egham Roses were in deep trouble and well behind the required run rate. Then in stepped Palmer, who after a slow start took to the Crane bowlers smashing the ball to and over the boundaries for fours and sixes. He looked at total ease and showed his class by hitting a tremendous 68 in no time at all and was threatening to take the game away from Crane.
Crane's bowlers & fielders needed some magic to stop him. Sanj flighted a delivery to Palmer who danced down the track and took an almighty swing and smashed the ball straight over the bowlers head. The ball raced along and was heading for a Six over Ozzie's head.
Ozzie was on the boundary and as the ball started to drop behind him over the boundary line, he drew his arm back over his head and miraculously caught the ball waist high with one hand. A most astonishing and amazing catch which helped swing the game back into Crane's favour.
After Palmer's departure, Egham Roses lost their momentum and finished their innings on a very commendable 210.
A superb game played in a fun atmosphere against a most-friendly side. Well Done Crane and hats off to the opposition.
