Barton CC *TOUR* v Crane Cricket Club Crane on Sun 30 Jul 2006 at 2.30pm
Crane Cricket Club Lost Loss by 66 runs
Match report
With the 2006 tour of Torquay rapidly drawing to a close, Crane took their convoy on a five-minute trip up the road for their last game against locals Barton CC. On a gloriously sunny day on the southwest coast, Mitul Bathia, in his role of captain-for-the-day, lost the toss and settled for a stint in the field.
Crane called upon Gurjit Sandhu to open the bowling, and it didn’t take long before the young quick bowler hit the mark, bowling out opener Barnes. However, the introduction of Barton’s number 3, Parker, saw the hosts soar to 100-1 in double quick time.
A breakthrough was needed, and the arrival of spinner Chaz Virdee produced just that. Parker, on 53 runs, hauled one of Chaz’s deliveries out to the boundary where Gurjit held a super catch. This was followed by the wicket of opener Watkins for 61 runs, as another skied effort was this time held by Rishi Tind at mid-on, giving leg-spinner Romy Sharma a prized wicket.
Romy went on to take 3 more wickets – one clean bowled, one by way of lbw, and one smartly caught by Hardeep Khangura at mid-wicket – a superb man-of-the-match effort from Romy, given the quality of the opposition, and a great advert for the art of jug evasion!
However, Barton CC were mostly in the ascendancy, as a score of 65 runs from number 6 batsman, Grainger, would suggest. Barton declared with 2 overs remaining, leaving them with a total of 258 runs.
Chief green-wig-wearer in the field was Rick Brar – his succession of late mistimed dives virtually ensured the green-stuff never left his head. However he was kind enough to lend it for short periods to Gurjit, Rishi and Amarjit Sandhu for similarly lame fielding efforts. An audible sigh of relief from the Crane boys filled the air as the Wig disappeared into the kitbag for the last time, however, a huge gulp followed, as the cursed duck hat was waved before them!
Mitul ushered his troops out from the tea interval, and sent in Crane openers, Chaz and Hardeep. The curse of the duck hat struck immediately, as Chaz fell victim to an lbw decision without troubling the scorers. Hardeep continued to 25 runs, hitting a trademark drive through extra-cover along the way. Unfortunately, with his form looking good, Hardeep got a thin snick on a delivery from Watkins and Barton keeper Aqeel accepted the gift.
Middle order wickets began to tumble, with the second duck of the game registered by Rishi. As the last person to receive a duck, Rishi was left with the unwanted honour of looking after the duck hat till next year. Beyond this, Crane produced a great showing with the bat as the lower order led the way with superb efforts from Rick (29 runs) and Gurjit (41 runs), in particular. Rick’s cameo knock saw him awarded with a batting man-of-the-match tour t-shirt, and Gurjit’s batting was sublime in the face of some good bowling. Between them, Gurjit and Rick amassed eleven boundaries.
Supporting roles from Romy (19 runs) and Amarjit (20 not out) helped push the score past 180 runs, but with wickets now in short-supply, Crane were too far behind the run-rate to mount a serious challenge. Crane batted through the remaining overs and finished the days play on 192 for 9.
Congratulations to Barton CC, and many thanks for an enjoyable tour game. Well done to all the Crane-sters who took part in the match. Time to find out who’s got space in their car for the long drive home… till next year.
