Crane Cricket Club Won Win by 40 runs
Match report
Crane finally put an end to their Jekyll and Hyde season by following last Sunday’s win with a successive victory this Sunday over the Egham Roses. A hot summer’s day greeted both teams at Egham’s ground, near Windsor Castle. The vital toss was won by Crane skipper Amarjit Sandhu, on what looked like a lovely batting track.
Although a bit leisurely, Crane got off to a solid start losing their first wicket with 35 runs on the board. The introduction of Hardeep Khangura, in for the departed Oz Hussain, soon got the run-rate motoring as he and Chaz Virdee put together a partnership of 64 runs in double-quick time. Exquisite stroke-making from both batsmen saw the ball disappear repeatedly to the boundary lines, on a lightning fast outfield.
With the score at a healthy 99-1, Chaz (44 runs) became Egham’s second victim. But much worse was to follow… Bowling in tandem, Egham Roses’ skipper Stuart Palmer and Kevin Stangroom delivered the wickets of Hardeep (35 runs), Gurjit Sandhu, and Romy Sharma, in a frantic six-over spell that left Crane reeling at 123 for 5.
Not all hope was lost for Crane, but it was going to take a meaningful effort from here onward to achieve a competitive enough run-total; what Crane produced was nothing short of monumental! Seemingly oblivious to the mass carnage of Crane wickets, Mitul Bathia and Bob Atwal put the hammer down and took the game to Egham, smashing no fewer than 12 boundaries including a six from Mitul. For their heroics, both Mitul (50 runs) and Bob (32 runs) ended up not-out in a superb unbroken partnership of 99 runs from the last 12 overs. To the delight of the Crane mob, Mitul secured a jug for his thirsty team-mates by reaching 50 runs in the second-to-last ball of the innings.
Having put on 222 runs, which at one stage didn’t look achievable, Crane returned from the tea break looking to protect their precious lead. With Egham opener’s Neal Foulds and Danny Thatcher at the crease, Crane’s Sunny Bajwa and Gurjit bowled at them well, maintaining good pressure. It was Gurjit who made the vital breakthrough - his brilliant slower ball left Foulds snookered, as it slipped through his legs to hit the stumps.
Soon after, Amarjit brought Mitul into the attack. A special mention here for Mitul who bowled his 8 overs straight-through, on the back of his colossal batting performance. During his and Oz’s bowling spell, several dropped catches went down until Rick Brar took an absolute blinder at long-off to give Oz his first wicket. In came talented Egham Roses skipper Stuart Palmer who quickly got into the groove, edging Egham ever closer to a match winning position.
Crane needed Palmer’s wicket and, with the scene set, youngster Fiazal Hussain stepped up to take it, with Bob Atwal holding a sublime catch at cover. This was Fiazal’s first ever wicket for Crane and just reward for keeping his head up. A great knock from Palmer though, who scored 41 runs for Egham. With Fiazal’s confidence flowing he went on to take a second wicket, this time clean bowling Ruben Flower.
Throughout the innings, Crane bowled with resolve. Oz and Amarjit in particular kept things tight, with skipper Amarjit taking two wickets and a catch. The fielding was also a plus point – Bob Atwal took a second catch to give Romy a wicket, and Rick ran non-stop in the hot outfield. The Roses showed some resistance in the tail, with C. Mark and K. Stangroom keeping the castle gate shut. But it was Oz, in the end, who stormed the castle walls and took the final two wickets of the innings, leaving him with a three-wicket-haul for the match.
So a valliant effort from Egham Roses, who finished with a respectable score of 182 in their run-chase. We take this opportunity to thank the Roses for their hospitality. And well done to Crane for securing back-to-back wins and for a great performance that will live long in the memory.
