Crane Cricket Club Crane v ICL on Sun 28 May 2006 at 2pm
Crane Cricket Club Won Win by 95 runs
Match report
Crane welcomed an away team travelling light, for an unfortunate spate of unavailability for ICL cricket club saw them only able to field eight players. As a pre-arranged act of goodwill, Crane lent ICL a player as Rishi Tind turned out for his first game of the season – for the opposition! The captains were welcomed out in the middle by an awfully wet and sticky wicket. With hopeful thoughts of ‘bowl first!’ resounding through the minds of both captains, the vital toss was won by away skipper Andy Bishop who, not surprisingly, elected to bowl.
Padded up and in action, Crane, as expected, were finding the wicket tough to bat on. A couple of exquisitely timed strokes from Chaz Virdee failed to make the boundary, the ball clearly not coming-on to the bat. ICL’s opening pressure bowling eventually told on Sunny Bajwa, out caught behind to Anish Patel, with the score now 9 for 1. With conditions as they were, Crane needed someone to bat with attrition… so up stepped man-of-the-match, Chaz.
Showing good awareness, Chaz initially kept the scoreboard ticking, picking the gaps nicely and running two’s with skipper Hardeep Khangura. With the wicket slowly drying, a patient Chaz began to show the more adventurous side to his game and the boundaries began to flow. Demonstrating good shot selection, Chaz struck 5 fours and 3 magnificent sixes on his way to an outstanding score of 83 runs. His effort with Hardeep (26 runs) yielded a high partnership of 76 runs, with Hardeep hitting a couple of fours of his own.
Later on Zahir Ibrahim (13) survived a hat-trick ball from ICL skipper Andy Bishop and went on to support a 51 run partnership with Mitul Bathia (28), in which Mitul smashed a huge six to the longest part of the ground! By the end of the innings, Crane had amassed a total of 204 runs, a respectable effort given the soggy conditions.
Crane took to the field after tea with a spring in their step. Sunny Bajwa opened up the bowling with a maiden, and together with Ranjit Jutley applied good pressure. That pressure presented the first wicket to Sunny Bajwa, who looked on in anticipation as Crane youngster Fiazal Hussain arrived to take a great catch. The introduction of batsman Sunil Kumar for ICL brought worry for Crane as he and opener Anish Patel batted aggressively for a 61 run partnership.
With ICL’s run-chase at 77 for 1, up stepped Crane skipper Hardeep to claim the crucial wicket of opener Anish (30). This was shortly followed by the equally valuable wicket of Kumar (32), clean bowled by Mitul. Mitul then took the prize wicket of normally-Crane-batsman Rishi, bowling him out for a duck (“it swung in late, honest!” – Rishi). Nik Patel was later given the ball and he was virtually unplayable, opening up with two wicket-maidens and a maiden! Having earlier taken a great catch, Nik proceeded to take the wicket of ICL skipper Andy Bishop, who tickled one down legside only to see keeper Anoop Sharma glove a brilliant left-handed catch. In a show of good sportsmanship, ICL captain Andy walked down the wicket and shook Nik’s hand. Well done Andy.
With ICL’s injured keeper-batsman unable to come to the crease, Nik had claimed the final wicket of the match and a triumphant Crane walked off the field, comfortable winners by 95 runs. Thank you ICL for a good day’s cricket, we wish you every success for the rest of the season. And well done Crane for a superb display in tough conditions.
