Crane Cricket Club Crane v Yeading CC on Sun 14 May 2006 at 2pm
Crane Cricket Club Lost Loss by 6 wickets

Match report
Following their heroics last week, a buoyant Crane gathered at the Cranford Community College grounds to welcome Yeading Cricket Club. A dismal day greeted both teams, with the overhanging clouds threatening to make the day’s play awkward. Captain Hardeep Khangura, for the first time this season, lost the toss and instructed Crane to pad-up.

Making best of the situation, openers Chaz Virdee and Oz Hussain pushed the ball around nicely to get Crane off to a great start. Both batsmen penetrated the infield with wonderful accuracy, and as a result were calling for runs two-at-a-time. Chaz, with his eye-in, then went for a biggie, crunching the ball straight over the ropes for a maximum!

With 37 runs on the board, Crane’s highest partnership of the game, Oz (20) unfortunately chipped a ball back to bowler Janjua giving Yeading their 1st wicket. Worse was to follow… Bob Rehill, having opened his account with a boundary, fell lbw to Janjua’s last ball of the over. Crane were now 56 for 2. And during a spell of three consecutive maiden overs for Yeading, two more Crane wickets fell including opener Chaz for 21 runs, leaving the score now at 56 for 4.

Despair for Crane, but fortunately during the loss of these last two wickets, youngster Gurjit Sandhu was a spectator at the safe end of the wicket and, realising his team was in trouble, responded with a maturity beyond his tender age. Gurjit took control of the Crane innings, running two’s and pinching singles from the last ball of several overs. When the bad balls came Gurjit despatched them past the white boundary flags on no fewer than four occasions. He kept going while short, sharp cameo innings (in particular Mitul Bathia’s 10 runs including 2 fours) were being formed at the other end. Rick Brar (Senior) came in at number 11 with what was probably the heaviest bat he could find. Seemingly casual, he proceeded to hit some lusty blows including a six in a frantic final over. Crane posted a total of 160 runs with Rick finishing 15 n.o. and Gurjit 47 n.o.j.a. (not out jug avoided)!

Crane did well to bat through the 40 overs. However, with a modest total to defend, Hardeep decided to put his trust in his ‘twin-towers’, Nik Patel and Mitul. Both openers bowled their hearts out, passing the edge of the blade on numerous occasions. A combination of Yeading’s patience and dropped catches was proving to be Crane’s undoing. In the end a bowling change reaped some reward as Gurjit took 2 wickets to enhance his own awesome display.

Yeading batsmen Chaggers and Ejaz pushed the accelerator until Nik held onto a fine catch to give Hardeep the wicket of Ejaz (28). Nik wasn’t done there, as an instinctive pick-up and throw earned him a remarkable run out as Hardeep whipped off the bails to dismiss Chaggers for 42. Nonetheless defiant Yeading number five Janjua (48 not out) continued his assault and together with Kainth guided Yeading to a well-deserved victory.

Congratulations to Yeading CC for a great game and a good win. We’ll see you again soon. And commiserations Crane on this occasion. Let’s take forward the positives from this game and come back stronger next time.
