Putney CC v Crane Cricket Club Crane on Sun 07 May 2006 at 2pm
Crane Cricket Club Won Win by 9 wickets

Match report Crane travelled to the home of Putney Cricket Club to play their part in a game, which was going to be like no other. With a black bands adorned, a brave Crane team took to the field to honour one of their brightest stars, Jasbir Bains, who heartbreakingly passed away two days prior to this match.

To play in and be a part of this fixture Crane needed to show great courage and a big heart, virtues which were displayed in abundance from the very special man Crane were commemorating, and on a day dedicated to our much-loved ‘Jazzy B’, Crane shone brightly and delivered an inspired performance.

Winning the toss, captain Hardeep Khangura opted to field, a decision, which was to prove wise as the game, was to unfold. Sunny Bajwa was given the new ball and, right from the off, Crane began to pile on the pressure. A tight opening spell from Sunny and Gurjit Sandhu set the tone for the match, triggering a flow of wickets that Putney struggled to stem, and alas they were to be left stranded all out for 77 runs.

Amarjit Sandhu (Amo), chief instigator in the hunt for wickets, bagged four and needed just one more for a 5-wicket haul. However this was going to cost him a jug and Anoop Sharma made sure Crane got one, taking a great stumping off Amo’s bowling for his 5th wicket! Another ‘man of the match’ performance from Amo as his figures would suggest, but admittedly every Crane bowler bowled with aplomb with Sunny Bajwa, Gurjit and Oz Hussain each taking a wicket for a miserly economy of runs. Nik Patel also came to the party and rounded off the Putney innings with a brace at the end to go with his two catches in the match, the first of which was a brilliant effort running back towards the boundary.

After a super effort in the field (and a belly full of tea) Crane sat down to watch their run chase. Openers Chaz Virdee and Bob Rehill didn't disappoint, batting sublimely to bring Crane closer to Putney’s total. Chaz, who is settling in nicely, struck three boundaries for his 26 runs before he was dismissed leg-before. Playing in his first match for Crane, Sunny Atwal (10 not out) picked up the baton and together with a determined Bob Rehill (19 not out) guided Crane to an emphatic victory by 9 wickets.

A top score of 15 by Putney batsman Kaplan, and a wicket for Danish was little consolation for an unfortunate Putney team. Skipper Hardeep would like to commend Crane for a fantastic effort in the field, especially praising the groundwork of all our fielders and their support of the bowlers. We would also like to thank Putney Cricket Club for their hospitality and wish them well for their upcoming fixtures. We offer them special thanks for joining in the minute silence preceding the game.

This match is dedicated to Jazzy B. Well done Crane for producing such a fitting display.
