Bar Hill CC (at South Devon CC) v Crane Cricket Club Crane on Thu 07 Jul 2005 at 2pm
Crane Cricket Club Won Win by 21 runs
Match report
So to the first game of the tour where we played Bar Hill at South Devon Cricket Club based in Newton Abbot, a busy market town that originated as two settlements situated at the head of the river Teign and established towards the end of the twelfth century. The two places amalgamated in 1633, and are no longer distinguishable as separate entities; however two medieval churches remain to the north and south of the town respectively.
With skipper Hardeep sidelined through illness, the tour captaining duties were kindly filled-in by our able vice-skip Amo (the Hulk).
Batting first, Crane made a disastrous start and soon were struggling at 34 for 5 after 14 overs. A magical maiden 50 (which included 5 fours) by Gurjit and an awesome 77 (which included 12 fours and 2 sixes) by Mitul firstly helped steady this sinking ship and secondly helped the ship to accelerate to a huge score. This magnificent partnership of 101 in 15 overs followed by a cameo knock by our overseas player, Zubin, helped Crane to an impressive 212 off the allotted 40 overs.
The buoyant Crane players came out with a swing & swagger to their step after witnessing some fine batting. Firstly with the bat and now with the ball, Mitul and Gurjit showed their class. Bar Hill were soon in deep trouble at 59 for 5 after 15 overs.
But to their credit they fought hard and with some excellent running between the wickets had kept up with the run rate and soon were making inroads in the run chase.
But Crane held their nerve and took wickets at crucial points, which turned the result into Crane’s favour. Romy bowled beautifully during the most pressurised moment of the game taking 3 wickets with Gurjit finishing with 3 as well.
A great game played in the best of spirits by a wonderful Bar Hill team.
A special thank you to Barry Widecombe and his wife for giving up their time in hosting the two touring teams at their ground.
Note that both the Duck Hat & ‘Thanks for Coming’ (TFC) t-shirt belonged to Indrabir this day.
