Holyport CC v Crane Cricket Club Crane on Sun 04 Sep 2005 at 1.30pm
Crane Cricket Club Won Win by 34 runs
Match report
The picturesque ground of Holyport CC was the setting for a fantastic match, which saw Crane run out victors by 34 runs after scoring a mammoth 259 runs in 40 overs.
On a freakishly hot September’s day, captain Hardeep walked out to the middle to find a good batting track and a short boundary all-round. The Toss was won and, without hesitation, Hardeep elected to bat.
Crane required a decent start and that we got, with Romy and Bob R. putting on a combined 50 runs from the first 13 overs. Some trademark driving from Romy was paralleled by a couple of sumptuous cover boundaries from Bob R. With the opening bowlers struggling for a wicket Holyport called for K. Baillie who duly obliged by breaking the stumps of both our openers, Romy (25) and Bob R. (35). This brought Gurjit and Hardeep to the crease in the 14th and 20th overs respectively.
With the score on 87 at 20 overs, Crane required an injection of pace to the innings… what they got was fireworks! Hardeep wasted no time in despatching the ball to all parts, hitting the boundary 4 times with his first 5 balls faced, however the best was yet to come! In the 26th over he started bludgeoning the ball way beyond the perimeter fencing, twice scoring a maximum sixer, with 3 fours thrown in for good measure!
That over went for 24 runs! …But now a special mention to young Gurjit who wasn’t tagging along for the ride; Gurjit played some delightful strokes, timing the ball to the boundary with an ease that belies his tender age while always scoring at a-run-a-ball.
Hardeep relentlessly moved on to a magical 104 runs (from 55 balls) while Gurjit amassed 52 runs (from 59 balls), an outstanding performance from them both and a partnership that yielded 148 runs.
Crane’s final score tallied 259 runs for six wickets down, with 172 runs coming from our last 20 overs.
Holyport came out after tea with bat in hand knowing that they needed to score at 6.5 runs an over to win. Not an easy task, but from memory of previous encounters Holyport have always been a good batting side and so they proved it again.
At the 13th over the hosts were 67 without loss, 17 runs more than what we had at the same point. A breakthrough was needed, so step forward our young left-arm bowler Gurjit. With Crane starting to tire in the field, Gurjit produced a peach of a delivery, which curved slightly away from the left-hand opener and into the stumps. This much-needed wicket was soon followed by another similar swinging delivery, which “swang” back in to opener number 2 clattering into the stumps yet again!
Great stuff, but this brought their South African overseas player (P. Messina) to the wicket and in no time at all, Crane were chasing the ball all over the green unable to prevent the flood of boundaries. As the run-rate began to pick up, Crane placed more fielders in the deep, with Bob R. in particular exhibiting two superb last-ditch sliding stops on the boundary. Ricky and Rishi also fielded tenaciously, covering lots of ground.
We needed Messina’s wicket and Nik got it! It was just reward for a persistent spell of quick bowling, pegging back the top of Messina’s off stump, a delightful sight for our fast bowler. Hardeep brought himself on to bowl and ripped through Holyport’s middle order, taking 4 wickets to add to his century. Nik finished with praiseworthy figures of 8overs-0mdns-26runs-2wkts. After 40 overs, Holyport had scored 225 runs, falling short of Crane’s total by 34 runs, but a very good run chase nonetheless.
Congratulations to Crane for an outstanding team effort, and we thank you Holyport for your hospitality and for a great game. We’ll see you next year.
