Uxbridge Casuals CC v Crane Cricket Club Crane on Sun 03 Jul 2005 at 2pm
Crane Cricket Club Won Win by 6 wickets
Match report
The Hardeep Shipwreck (Samesan) - The Hardeep boat was sunk by Allied bombers in the latter part of World War 2. It was an Indonesian cargo-ship, which had been commandeered by the Japanese army to run supplies to Thailand where they were building a railway linking the country to Burma.
Chimes - Also known as Tubular bells are musical instruments in the percussion family. The 1812 Overture - using Tubular bells to mimic the sound of heavy and impractical church bells - is an orchestral work by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky commemorating the victory of Russia in the Napoleonic Wars in 1812.
Hardeep's men buoyant after last weeks battling display were full of confidence as they went to play Uxbridge Casuals for the second time this season. The game, played at the Middlesex County Ground, has been a regular fixture for a few years now and both sets of teams always relish this occasion. Each time this game is played (be it home or away), the weather has always been a mix of cold, rain, cloudy and windy. Today we were welcomed with rain and clouds. Our fixture was a timed game.
Hardeep won the toss and elected to bowl first so to take advantage of the overcast conditions. It was a seamers track with Mitul, Gurjit and Jason soon having the Uxbridge Batsman in trouble with movement and swing. Continuing his form Mitul bowled brilliantly taking 2 wickets. Gurjit showing his talent bowled beautifully with the batsmen playing & missing and Jason bowled with the discipline & stamina he is renowned for taking 3 wickets in a 15 over continuous spell.
With Crane's sharp fielding preventing the singles and Amo taking a great catch in the slips, the Uxbridge batsman found it hard to score at first in the conditions but as the track was good for batting they hit the bad balls with ease to the boundary. Uxbridge battled onwards making small partnerships and ensuring that the runs did not stagnate. The best of their batting was from Edmonds and Heath who both scored breathtaking Fifties with some powerful stroke-play and in a very quick time. The luck was on their side as Crane were left to rue the dropped chances both men gave very early on in their innings. Uxbridge made an impressive 178 under the conditions.
The rain seized to fall and the clouds broke away to bring in the sunshine when Crane came out to bat. The conditions made it better to both bat and bowl on - so the key to victory was who exercised their skills the better.
Uxbridge quickly stepped into gear and with some excellent line & length bowling had Crane struggling to find the boundaries. With the final 20 overs about to start, Crane were 61 for 4 wickets down. Hardeep continuing his splendid form was hitting the ball with ease and finding the gaps at will but his explosive nature was missing. He and Indrabir kept the scoreboard ticking over but something was not right. Like the Samesan 60 years earlier, Hardeep got shipwrecked as his innings ended with him being retired hurt. A special mention to our master blaster who scored a battling and superb 45 - god only knows what he would have done if fully fit.
Crane at this stage needed to score 96 to win of 14 overs. Jason, calm as ever, batted under the pressure with ease and scored at will. He immediately upped the tempo with his eye for a quick single and excellent running between the wickets scoring a brilliant 43 which included the shot-of-the-day “point-drive” with the ball racing to the boundary in a straight line and along the ground. Indrabir looking solid & unnerved started building his innings slowly but soon was growing in confidence and like a man inspired he began to find the boundary with ease with some exquisite stroke place and timing of the highest order. Salutes to him as he went on to score his maiden fifty - a magnificent 53 not out (which included 7 fours).
Both Indrabir and Jason orchestrated Crane’s very own 2006 Overture as they ‘chimed’ us through to victory with over four overs to spare. Well Done Crane for what looked like at one stage an impossible victory and a special mention to our hosts who once again welcomed us with a warm appreciation as well as playing the game of cricket as one should do with integrity, spirit and above all fun. See you guys next year.
Doctors Analysis at the mid-point of the season - Crane are doing well and are showing signs of improvement each week but need to shrug off a few cobwebs which cause them to be, on occasion, very sloppy.
Health Check - Four players have suffered injury/illness so far - the highest casualty rate with Sanj out with a severely twisted ankle, Ranjit with a sprained knee, Nik with his hamstring and Hardeep with his illness.
Treatment - The perfect tonic to cure all alignments is 4/5 days of fun in the sun with plenty of fluids and good eating, which can all be found when visiting Torquay.
