Egham Roses CC v Crane Cricket Club Crane on Sun 26 Jun 2005 at 2pm
Crane Cricket Club Won Win by 36 runs
Match report
In the days of old Robin Hood with his merry men (Little John, Friar Tuck, Maid Marion, Allan a Dale, Will Scarlet, Much the Miller), in the forests of Sherwood, would rob the rich to feed the poor and outwitting the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Today Hardeep led his merry men, who were themselves full of merriment, onwards to the picturesque ground of Windsor, where the roses of the Egham variety lay in wait as Windsor castle stood magnificently in the background. The Union Jack was raised which meant even the Queen had the opportunity to see some dazzling cricket.
A hot day welcomed both teams and on winning the toss the opposition captain asked Crane to bat first, much to Hardeep's surprise. Crane got off to a good start scoring at a good rate. Tushar played steadily with confidence for his first game of the season scoring 14 and Hardeep continued his sumptuous form making a splendid 31. After 18 overs, Crane were 61 for 4. The track was good for batting and any short ball would always go to the boundary. The runs were there to be made but Crane had to build partnership so to allow an onslaught in the final few overs.
At Robin Hood's side was Allan A Dale, whose songs and music were regularly heard throughout the leafy splendour of Sherwood. Today Hardeep had Nik, who perfectly tuned his willow and set about making a beautiful score. Nik played sublimely with some lovely stroke play scoring a brilliant 67 which included 9 fours and 1 six. He was eventually out with the score at 132, and with Jason they made 71 runs in 11 overs.
Mitul played with ease scoring a quick 19 and with Jason they made 46 runs in 7 overs. Jason played exceptionally well for a splendid 37 with some excellent running and held the lower order together as he saw Crane pass 200. Varun, also playing his first game of the season, came in late on and made a quick fire 12 helping Crane reach a very commendable 217 of their allotted overs.
Egham Roses had to bat well if they wanted to win and a brilliant start is what they got. Like playing 20-20 cricket, Egham got off to a flying start scoring 32 of the first 3 overs with the ball being sprayed all over the park.
Renowned for his size and strength, Little John was Robin Hood's right hand man and was famous for his prowess in hand to hand combat. Today Hardeep had Mitul, who went to war with the Roses with his own prowess of swing bowling. After a bad start he quickly found his rhythm and in his second over had both the openers back in the pavilion with some terrific swing bowling that would have made Waqar Younis proud.
Egham were still in the hunt and were 77 for 2 after 15 overs with Stuart Parmar playing brilliantly. Romy bowled the ball of the day, the wrong-un, to get Stuart Parmar's wicket and then the game swung into Crane's favour with Egham losing 4 wickets in the next 6 overs and scoring only 27 runs. Egham made a spirited chase with Ruben Flower making a hard fought 42 but with the pressure of an ever-growing run-rate they eventually were out for 181 in the 38th over. Crane's fielding was both good, with some excellent catches & run outs, as well as sloppy with some not-so good ground fielding & dropped chances.
Mitul and Sanj both bowled well under pressure as the batsman came out with an 'all guns blazing' approach that nearly paid off. Sanj ended with 2 wickets but a special mention to Mitul who bowled exceptionally well with final figures of 8 overs - 3 maidens - 4 wickets for 12 runs. These figures are more impressive given that his first over went for 7 runs and included a six.
Commiserations and thanks to Egham for a superb game and we once again much appreciate the friendly welcome and banter we have grown accustomed to.
Well done Crane for a great win. We now wait in anticipation for the return leg when we host Egham.
