Yeading CC v Crane Cricket Club Crane on Sun 29 May 2005 at 2pm
Crane Cricket Club Won Win by 11 runs
Match report
Intro lyrics of "Greatest Love Of All" by Whitney Houston: I believe the children are our future, Teach them well and let them lead the way.
Intro lyrics of Billy Ocean’s: 'When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going'.
With their first win under their belts Crane went onto Yeading. Another dry but overcast & cold day welcomed the teams for a day’s play of cricket.
With both the captain and vice-captain unavailable for the game, these duties went to Anoop and Jason. The skipper once again won the toss and elected to bat first.
Crane made a solid start with Romy, Jason and Sunny all reaching 20 runs plus. The shot play was of the highest quality but the best attribute was Crane's ability to run quick singles putting pressure on the Yeading fielders. Crane scored steadily making small partnerships along the way. Romy was looking comfortable before getting out in the 11th over with the score at 34. Jason and Sunny upped the tempo from the off with some unthinkable lightning fast singles causing the Yeading fielders to buckle under the pressure and giving away needless over-throws. It was like watching cheetahs race, both running with grace and an ease associated with these wild beasts. They scored an impressive 65 runs of 11 overs.
The ICC then set in where from 98 for 2 in the 21st over, Crane ended up struggling at 135 for 9 in the 35 over. But Billy Ocean began to sing and they don't get any tougher in determination than Amo and Anoop. They both dug deep and got Crane out of trouble scoring 27 in the next 4 overs with Amo scoring a very hard fought 20.
The highest scorer for Crane were extras at 38 which indicated some poor bowling by Yeading thus for Crane to win the game, their fielding and bowling had to be at its best. Crane needed to defend 162 runs for another impressive victory.
Crane's bowlers quickly got into gear, finding a rhythm that would have impressed many on the dance floor. Thank god we were not in Brighton on Tour on THAT weekend!
Jason bowled a frugal spell where he only conceded 10 runs in his allotted 8 overs and, with Gurjit, laid the foundations for a Crane win. Jason must be Crane's unluckiest bowler as the batsmen played and missed again and again and again. Gurjit bowled exceptionally well with both maturity and intelligence and he to stifled the Yeading batsman in making runs. They both bowled in tandem for 11 overs conceding only 31 runs and taking one wicket each.
Nik was at his most hostile best and for the first time this season he roared like the Simba we know him to be. He ended up with a breathtaking 4 wickets. Yeading were still not out of the contest with Ejaz batting well but when Romy got his wicket with a beautiful ball, the game was all but slipped away from Yeading who were now 118 for 6 after 33 overs. Nik, Romy and Gurjit continued to tighten the screw by conceding only 26 runs in the next 6 overs. Amo bowled the final over with ease, as Yeading needed 19 runs for victory.
The fielding from all of the Crane players was impressive & impeccable with superb ground-work and most of the offered catch & run-out chances taken - This was the difference from winning and losing.
So onto Gurjit who opened the attack for the first time and showed us all a glimmer of what the future holds for Crane. As Whitney Houston sings let this be the light to which Crane should follow in all aspects of life.
Well Done Crane for a brilliant performance and we all look forward to facing Yeading in the return leg at Crane for another exciting match.
